Af Jörðinni/ Of the Earth was an installation created for a solo exhibition in Kaffistofan Gallery using only three materials; white cotton, dead wood and clay. These natural materials acted as a guide towards the overarching theme of the rituals surrounding death. In the work process Hallsteinsdottir used these materials intuitively, creating the individual elements of the installation, united by their ‘organic’ properties, which in turn worked together to form an imagined death ritual, solidified in a performance wherein a body (in these images played by the artist, but at other times over the course of the exhibition someone else) was buried in the exhibition space.
